Vinny I can understand why you are pissed, you are one of the
huge number of people that "played by the rules," but still took
it in the shorts.
While I don't like it any more than you do, the spells,
incantations, superstitions, myths, etc. that served the majority
of people pretty well in the past are no longer operational, and
indeed may well be counter-productive.
The problem is that with the changes in US demographics [e.g. age
distribution, ethnic composition], population distribution [e.g.
rural/small towns to giant urban areas, rust belt to sun belt],
economic composition [e.g. huge reductions in the fraction of
population employed in farming and manufacturing], financial
regulations [e.g. repeal of Glass-Steagall, internationalization,
and the rise of the sovereign corporation] and changes in the
social mores [e.g. abortion on demand and out-of-wedlock births],
the traditional "rules of thumb," and behaviors are no longer
operational except in the few isolated pockets of the
economy/society that time has bypassed.
While there is a great deal of posturing and oration by the
politicians and talk show hosts, no one knows what is going to
happen, except it will *NOT* be a return to the "good old days,"
which were a fantasy in many ways for large numbers of the
population [e.g. blacks].
What should be clear to everyone is that the huge amounts of
capital and relative industrial power that the United States
attained as the result of their victory in WW2, and post WW2
exports have been dissipated [and in MNSHO largely wasted], and
that the US citizens and government [at all levels] must now
"pull in their horns."
"Universal Health Care" is only a small part of this. While it
remains unknown if the Obama health plan or the Congressional
health plan are even viable, what is clear is that the present
system is doomed, when the trends in governmental and personal
medical expenses are extrapolated/projected, and is currently
failing by objective measurements such as the rate of
infant/child immunization.
While getting hard numbers is like pulling teeth out of a
chicken, the question should not be "what will universal medical
care cost," but rather "what is the aggregate cost differential
between the proposed universal health care coverage and the
existing health care system, including avoided costs?"
It is well to remember that California is unique only in that it
is first, and as such should be regarded by citizens and
politicians/governments in other states as a [very big] canary in
the coal mine.
