Stopped by the ol' shop today (Bosses birthday).
Anyway, they've been using some trick tool holders. A few were first
tried on their new 15,000 RPM Fadal, but they were so good that they
got a bunch for all the machines, even some in HSK for the Makino.

Scroll down to page 7 MX Mini Chuck. As you can see, the shallow
taper collet is held by a screw from the retention knob side. Talking
to the guys, these have very little run out and don't vibrate at 15k.
They are great for tiny end mills where runout can kill them. I mean
the Pioneer Ad copy says all that, but who can put unlimited faith in ads.

also interesting to note that HPI & Lyndex used to be connected to
each other....not sure of the exact relationship, but they both still
offer very similar (or in other words, identical) products. Lyndex
calls this holder "Insider/MMC".
http://www.lyndex.com/prod_advanced.asp?type=3Dmmc
Exact same stuff. My personal favorite collet holders are also both
made by Lyndex/HPI. "SK/LSK"(lyndex) or "SX" (HPI) are very nice
holders. 5 micron @ 4" extension...balanced to over 20,000 RPM. And
yes...I have run them that fast....and I have yet to pull a tool out
of the collet (knock on wood)
Now then, back to HPI. We recently became a distributor for
them....don't get me wrong, our main business is a job shop, but other
shops in the area do buy their tooling from us. We recently tooled up
our H-plus 630 with HPI toolholders. Surprise, surprise, the
toolholders were 100% identical to some Sowa holders that we got a
year or so ago. A few months ago we needed a 1 1/2" BT40 holder in a
hurry...we ordered an "Accupro" brand from J&L. Surprise, surprise, it
also was the same thing as Sowa. Totally identical....cept for the
laser engraving on the holder said "Sowa" or "Accupro" (those 2 brands
even use the same font) HPI at least had a different font. All of
these different brands are made from the same mfg in Taiwan.....at
least the "standard" endmill holders/ER collet holders are. I am
thinking that HPI uses this Taiwan source for the "standard"
holders...and their more trick holders (SX, MX, dual contact holders)
are made by themselves.....I suspect this is the case because neither
Accupro or Sowa offer anything like this.
I have a very strong suspicion that there are many other toolholder
sellers (I won't call them MFG's) that use this same Taiwan company to
produce their holders.

Bob,
I know the guy that owns Pioneer. He used to import Nikken in the US
previous to their association with Lyndex. He also runs a company called
Pioneer Trading. We used to import a line of multi spindle CNC screw
machines through Pioneer. I've got nothing but good things to say about
Pioneer. Although we don't have too many reasons to deal with them lately
given our product mix. We did buy a high precision air chuck from them not
too long ago. It was perfect.
