I just received my digital readout from EZDRO (www.ezdro.com). I saw
their add in the Home Shop Machinist. I ordered the base unit and one
of their encoders and cables. I mounted the encoder on the end of a
small motor that I had so that I could see if it worked. I set it up
according to the instructions and set the pitch to 10 and the
resolution to 2048. It works great and the fractional display is
really cool. I was wondering if anyone has used this on a linear
scale. I have some scales that I picked up off of ebay but am not
sure of the connections.

Thanks!

I hate to be that guy...

This is a really cool device.
Neat features, the price is sweet.
If only you could preset a dimension, instead of resetting to zero, it would
be perfect.
I think I'd pay twice that amount if it preset.

It has no provision for backlash in the leadscrew.
On a manual machine with acmen leadscrews, you are better off with a
conventional DRO that read movement directly from the carriage or cross
slide (or base, table, and quill)
I do like the output to a VGA monitor, but I don't see any point in
putting an encoder on an acme leadscrew

I have one that I am going to install on my Legacy 900 Ornamental Wood
Router. It has a 3/4" acme lead screw on it that moves that router
down the carriage( x axis). I wanted to have a readout showing
fractions and decimal values. I am going to mount the second encoder
on the y axis. I realize that it is not as accurate as what a milling
machine might have with glass scales but I think it is going to be a
great addition to this machine. Since I do a fair amount of
woodworking I can think of a few other applications like on my panel
saw and my cutoff saw. I will post with updates.....

an encoder on an acme leadscrew is not the best way, but it is cheap, fast,
and better than not having one at all.

You could easily upgrade to a glass scale at a later date.
