To study the issue, or merely to report their own anecdotal experiences?
There is a difference.

also the 9/11 projects. it happens every time. scumbags gaming the system,
legal thievery. it's a shame. weren't there news reports about some stuff
going on in haiti also right now?
there was a restaurant near me (south east new york state) that got katrina
funding. i can't remember specifics now but there were ridiculous projects
being funded by the 9/11 thing too, i'd bet some of you guys can remember
some of them. something about a small cheese producing village in wisconsin
getting 9/11 funding or something?

Ever since the government began giving things out to the public there
have been people cheating. This is human nature. If you want to see it
on a grand scale just look at the money the military industrial complex
goes through. They spend our money on their war toys and on the wars
themselves like drunken sailors, only worse. But that is different from
the criticism of basic research, which is what a lot of these grants are
for. No one knows what we will find from these research projects. Most
scientific information that is really beneficial to society has come
from this kind of basic research. It doesn't have any specific thing
it's trying to discover and that is where the real breakthroughs come
from much of the time. We have thousands of things we use that came from
the space programs and when they did the research they had no idea what
they found would be worth anything. So basic research is really good.
Unfortunately, ignorant people jump on things they see as a waste of
money. But you never know when that research on tree frogs will come up
with something that saves your life ten years down the road. The thing
is the scientists doing the research never knew it either. You're just
glad they did it.
