Two basic assumptions about the Congress of the United States:

1.        The Congress of the United States is a representative body
for the citizens of the United States and thus should be
representative of the citizens of the United States.

2.        The members of a community should select their "brightest
and best" to represent them in Congress.

The recent and continuing examples of Cunningham, Delay, the
Kennedy's, the Abramhof tribe, etc. place assumptions (1) and (2)
above into direct conflict, as they clearly *ARE NOT* the "best
and the brightest" of the communities they represent, but they
*ARE* representative of the citizens in their communities,
rapidly increasing numbers of whom are bottle babies, pill
poppers, bottom pinchers, influence peddlers, scam artists, angle
players, corner cutters, whiners, malcontents, s**t disturbers,
etc.

New word for today: "problematique"

A "problematique" is said to exist when two contradictory
conclusions can logically be drawn from a set of assumptions.

In the past a "problematique" was regarded as a philosophical
disaster as it indicated the "assumptions" were logically
inconsistent and thus "incorrect."

While many people in the hard sciences still have this attitude,
it has generally proven to be more productive to regard a
"problematique" as an indicator of a problem with
language/definition-of-terms or an incomplete understanding of
the assumptions/conclusions. For example, the apparent
contradictory conclusions may both be true, but at different
times.

The resolution of a "problematique" may also force many of our
tacit and possibly subliminal /unconscious
assumptions/qualifications to the surface for analysis, which are
far more numerous than commonly assumed. [Indeed, it is alarming
and depressing to discover just how many of our most critical
decisions are based on these "silent"
assumptions/qualifications.]

Given the high intellectual capacity and intense interest
displayed by the subscribers to these news groups, based on the
resposes to the OT posts, in this and closely related topics, I
am interested in seeing how you resolve this "problematique," and
especially what tacit/subliminal assumptions this may have helped
you become aware of.

Unka George
(George McDuffee)

There is something to be said for government by a great aristocracy
which has furnished leaders to the nation in peace and war for generations;
even a democrat like myself must admit this.

But there is absolutely nothing to be said for government by a plutocracy,
for government by men very powerful in certain lines and gifted with the "money
touch,"
but with ideals which in their essence are merely those of so many glorified
pawnbrokers.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), U.S. Republican (later Progressive) politician,
president. Letter, 15 Nov. 1913.
