if you are not going to require much torque, why not just drill a hole in
the center and tap it and then thread in a huge shoulder bolt type shaft?

presumably it takes miniscule torque to rotate the cams against the switches

I don't want to remove the shaft and hand drilling and taping sounds like a
nightmare. If I pull the shaft, I'll just make a longer one, I've got plenty of
1" shafting stock.
