am a woodworker that makes had planes wooden hand planes. You can see
my stuff on my site www.knight-toolworks.com .
I have been thinking of making my tools out of two pieces of wood and
milling out the center but I am a ways from that. I needed a accurate
drill press and the cost was over ½ of a mill/drill.
There are things I want to do with metal and wood and it has been a
pain to get someone to do them. I wanted to be able to mill tool steel
brass and wood.
So I thought I would get a grizzly mill drill but my local tool dealer
got me the shopfox 2hp mill drill for 50.00 less then the grizzly and
I only had to pay 50.00 delivery for it and my bandsaw.
The only difference I could find was a better switch with reverse and
smaller t slots.
Well I had a ring in the concrete ceiling rated for more then the
drill so I used a come along to lift it up on my table with wheels and
I wheeled it into my shop. That was a bit nervous business.
Here are some pics of what I will be doing with it.

I use what endmills I get cheap from ebay or enco till I learn more
and don’t chip or break one. I had a 5/8” roughing 4f that was great
and I could take off ¼” in a single pass. But I had a couple short
pieces and the longer pieces were not supported and bent and broke the
em.
I wanted a way to finish my plane irons. I can cut them on my bandsaw
at 35 degrees and I have been grinding them on my belt sander to 30
degrees. But that was hard on my hands and ate up belts. I would go
through 8 or so with 120 irons.
I have not come up with a better way to get a iron clamped accurately
since they vary in length. I am only removing 5 degrees at most so all
I have to worry about is breaking off the corners.

I was pretty impressed on how well I can mill wood. Part of it is
purpleheart it is a pretty hard wood and I find tropicals machine
better then domestics. I find I can mill it at any speed if you don’t
have to exit through side grain. If you need to you want a higher
speed like 2500rpms (top speed I have) I find I can cut 1.5” deep and
about as fast as I can crank the handle with no problem at all. For
more fun the doing wood and easier then a router.

steel skate to the wood I used to do this on my sander. Machining it
is far easier

I have a lot to learn and it is hard to find the time to play around
with the mill. But I keep finding more jobs I can do with it.
Here are some pics of planes I have made with brass screwcaps I made
on the mill. They are a bit thin on the thinner part as I goofed up.
But hey it was the first thing I did.

Icvhanged the wood block for the irons to a metal one since using it
a lot chips get stuck in it and it slows thigns down.
