My ISP dropped newsgroup support a year ago. So I got a block account from
Octanews.com Almost free, I paid $4 for the first block and haven't used
it up yet.

it went down yesterday, back up now. It would be nice to have another news
server all set up. Any recommendations? I'm not paying a monthly charge.
Block billing is OK

Despite the badmouth Google Groups actually works quite well.

Then I guess that you have never had, or never learned how to use, a real
news server/reader. More importantly, Google seems to actually encourage spam
and spammers. On Usenet, Google is the problem, not the solution.

At work I've used whatever PC, Mac or Unix software the IT departments
installed. Downloading other software was generally discouraged. I
played with spam filtering and various tree-structured presentations,
then went back to a simple chronological display with only read/unread
indicated, which works well on a large screen.

This PC has a minimalist configuration to keep clone backups of C: on
one DVD.

Can't argue with that.

I can read all of the articles I haven't seenb before very quickly
with a read NNTP reader - by just using spacebar, "k", and "n".

google is about 10 times slower or more.
