Presumably the pallet/machine has to roll across the tailgate aswell
(or does the tailgate come off?).
Are the tailgates rated to 2.5 tons aswell?

I intend to lay an 8 x 4 of steel plate over the tailgate while
loading, as although it's intended for cars & minidiggers to roll up I
suspect that the wheels on a pallet truck would dig in. The tailgate
does lift off so the bed could be reversed against something like a
curb if necessary to give level loading. It would be simple to replace
the mesh with steel plate but not only is the windage significantly
increased, but the dead weight will go up and the carrying capacity go
down.

What are your roads like this time of year? If snow covered and using a
light vehicle I'd recommend waiting for a day where snow and ice is not a
factor.

Secure strapping with cribbing around the base to prevent sliding is very
important. When turning, remember that trailer is turning inside your
turning circle.
