Highest snipe wins, but people are not likely to get all stupid and
competitive like they do when you announce your interest in advance.

I think you're right, it seems to have sorted itself out after a
period of several hours yesterday, it was working fine by the end of
the day.
Thanks for the other suggestions, I'll see how it behaves over the
next few days.

Same here, never seen the point of sniping. There are only two ways to
lose an auction; too low a bid in the first place, and being beaten by
someone who's prepared to pay over the odds.
I tend to work out my best price, then add a 5% or so 'spoiler' -
which takes care of the 'oooh, lost it by 50p' kick. Never lost an
auction that fell within my valuation.
