Here they built the airplanes. My mother told me they were EXTREMELY
happy to give those jobs back when the men returned.

My mother-in-law was a shipyard welder for Kaiser during WW2 building
transports. She had fond memories of those days....

Welding is a small part of a long process after cutting and fitting. Women
can and do make good welders, but there's more to welding than the burning
of rods. Unless you're doing production pipe, or station welding, or the
like. Standing in one place all day welding something that's brought to you
and taken away when you're finished.
Women generally weld good because they have the disposition to do sewing,
crocheting, writing nicely, etc. It's all making lines that go where you
want them to go.
The only thing that women don't have is the oomph to muscle things when they
need to be muscled, although they can become proficient through the use of
mechanical advantage. Just some times when push comes to shove, they don't
have the muscle.
And how come the ones I've seen don't have the big hair, no welder's cap,
don't wear a tube top, and don't use a welding hood on an OA torch with no
02 on?
