Welding is the process of joining metals by melting the parts and then
using a filler to form a joint. Welding can be done using different
energy sources, from a gas flame or electric arc to a laser or
ultrasound.

Really not a real good explanation as Forge Welding, described in the
URL requires no filler metal; Spot welding uses no filler metal and
friction welding uses no filler metal. There are probably other
welding techniques that use no filler metal.
